On May 28, 1962, in Greenwood, Mississippi, James Michael Tyler, the youngest of five children, was born. His uncle was the inspiration for his name. Tyler was born and raised in Winona, Mississippi.

His father, a retired USAF captain, died when he was ten years old, and his mother died when he was eleven. Tyler relocated to Anderson, South Carolina, with his sister when he was 12 years old.

He was a member of the Clemson Players, a student theatre company, during his time at Clemson. This event fueled his desire to pursue a career as an actor.
