Dietrich Mateschitz (May 20, 1944 – October 22, 2022) was an Austrian business magnate. He was a co-founder and 49% shareholder in Red Bull GmbH.

Mateschitz previously worked in marketing at Unilever and Blendax. He discovered the drink Krating Daeng while traveling in Thailand, which he adapted into Red Bull. In 1984, he founded Red Bull GmbhH, which he launched in Austria in 1987.

His company has acquired or founded a number of sports teams around the world, including four-time Formula One Constructors’ Champions Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso, as well as association football teams FC Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig.

Mateschitz lived in Fuschl am See, Austria, but he also owned the Fijian island of Laucala, which he purchased for £7 million from the Forbes family.

He spent millions of dollars buying and restoring houses and castles in Austria’s Alps, saying, “I want to enjoy these places myself, but I also want to take care of them.”

He died on October 22, 2022, at the age of 78, after a long illness.

His death was revealed to the Red Bull team just minutes before qualifying for the 2022 United States Grand Prix began.
