Annie Ernauz Biography

Annie Ernauz (born September 1, 1940) is a French writer, literature professor, and Nobel laureate. Her mostly autobiographical literary work is intertwined with sociology. Ernaux was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2022.

Ernaux was born in Lillebonne, Normandy, and grew up in Yvetot, where her parents owned a café and grocery store in a working-class neighborhood.

Les Armoires vides (Cleaned Out), an autobiographical novel, launched Ernaux’s literary career in 1974.

She received the Renaudot Prize in 1984 for another of her works, La Place (A Man’s Place), an autobiographical narrative about her relationship with her father and her experiences growing up in a small town in France, as well as her subsequent process of moving into adulthood and away from her parents’ place of origin.

Ernaux switched from fiction to autobiography early in her career. Her work blends historical and personal experiences.

Many consider Ernaux’s 2008 historical memoir Les Années (The Years), which was well-received by French critics, to be her magnum opus.

Ernaux was awarded the 2022 Nobel Prize in Literature on October 6, 2022, for “the courage and clinical acuity with which she uncovers the roots, estrangements, and collective restraints of personal memory.”

Ernaux is the 16th French writer and the first Frenchwoman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. In congratulating her, French President Emmanuel Macron said she was the voice of “women’s freedom and the forgotten.”

Ernaux has two sons from her previous marriage to Philippe Ernaux. In the early 1980s, the couple divorced.
