Australian musician Christopher Andrew Joannou (born 10 November 1979) is best known for playing bass in the Newcastle-based alternative rock band Silverchair.
Joannou has Macedonian ancestry.
He is Louise Kipa’s twin brother. Of the three band members, he was the first to chop off his long hair. Fans of Silverchair dubbed Joannou “Lumberjack” because of his affinity for plaid clothing and trees. He learned how to play bass guitar from his bandmate Ben Gillies.
In addition to being a well-known bassist, Joannou served as the ARIA Award-winning Notes From A Ceiling and Feeling Sideways’ assistant producer for The Mess Hall.
In addition to almost exclusively using Ampeg B-15 Portaflex combos, he has primarily played G&L and Fender Precision Basses. According to gearwire.com, Joannou’s live setup consists of an Ampeg SVT-2 into an Ampeg 810 cabinet and a brand-new Ampeg B-15 combo.
In 2006, Joannou gave a speech at the opening of a mental health scholarship established in memory of his cousin Nathan Trepezanov, who had died by suicide in January of that year at the age of 21.
Joannou is a co-founder and co-owner of the Lovells Lager beer company. Additionally, in December 2013, he and three other businessmen opened a bar and small entertainment space on Parry Street in Newcastle, NSW, Australia.
