According to the United States Department of Treasury, she was the chief editor of a misinformation website called United World International, which it claims is owned by Putin friend Yevgeny Prigozhin, who also oversees the state-backed Wagner Group. At the same time, she worked as her father’s press secretary.

Dugina was an enthusiastic advocate of Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. She asserted, in particular, that the Russian army committed war crimes against Ukrainian citizens during the invasion.

She was travelling back to Moscow after visiting the annual “Tradition” festival, which bills itself as a “family festival for art enthusiasts.”

According to investigators, an explosive device was installed in the automobile.

It is unclear whether she was specifically targeted or whether her father, who was supposed to accompany her but switched to another car at the last minute, was the true target of the assassination attempt.

Denis Pushilin, the head of the Donetsk People’s Republic, alleged that Ukrainian officials were behind the explosion, although they denied any involvement.

Ilya Ponomarev, a former member of Russia’s Duma currently living in exile in Ukraine, said that the attack was carried out by a Russian partisan group known as the “National Republican Army (NRA).”
