According to FIJ, Egbunike was enjoying a meal in his office on Tuesday when “a fish bone stuck in the wrong place,” according to insiders at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
“He was eating in his office when a fish bone got stuck in his throat, and all attempts to dislodge it failed,” a long-time FIJ source at Force headquarters stated. “He had to be transported to the hospital, where physicians were able to surgically remove it.”
According to the source, Egbunike felt better after the treatment and went home.
“However, not long after going home, he began to experience severe discomfort and was rushed back to the hospital, where he died.”
A second Force Headquarters source, who also confirmed Egbunike’s presence at the hospital for the removal of the fish bone, claimed the DIG’s obesity put him at risk of worsening his health following any surgical procedure, no matter how simple.
“His health was so vulnerable since he was obese,” the source claimed, “and he did his hardest to control it, such as with the usual bed inside his office that allowed him to rest at short intervals whenever he felt weak.”
