Dwayne Haskins Jr. (May 3, 1997 – April 9, 2022) was an American football quarterback who spent three seasons in the National Football League.
He was a sophomore at Ohio State, where he won the Sammy Baugh Trophy and was named Rose Bowl MVP in 2019.
Haskins was born in Highland Park, New Jersey, and relocated to Potomac, Maryland, with his family while he was in ninth grade. From 2013 until 2016, he attended Bullis School and played football there, passing for 5,308 yards and 54 touchdowns.
Haskins was known by the nickname Simba, which he got from the main character in the 1994 film The Lion King. Mohamed Sanu, an NFL wide receiver, was his mentor in high school and college, whom he met through Mohamed Jabbie, one of his best friends and Sanu’s nephew. Haskins is a New Jersey native who grew up rooting for the New York Giants. Kalabrya Gondrezick-Haskins was Haskins’ wife.
After passing for 50 touchdowns, Haskins finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting in 2018.
In 2018, he beat out Joe Burrow for the starting job and had a fantastic year for the Buckeyes. He threw for 4,831 yards and 70 percent of his passes were completed. As the conference’s finest player, he received the Silver Football award from the Big Ten.
Haskins, a four-star recruit from Potomac, Maryland’s Bullis School, committed to Ohio State in 2016. He redshirted as a rookie and served as J.T. Barrett’s backup in 2017.
