Potente attended the Otto Falckenberg School of Performing Arts in Munich after graduating from high school in Germany. Potente began acting outside of school and made her cinematic debut in the 1995 student film Aufbruch. She was then discovered by a casting agency and cast in Hans Christian Schmid’s film Nach Fünf im Urwald (After Five in the Forest Primeval), directed by her then-boyfriend.
She made her cinematic debut in the comedy After Five in the Forest Primeval (1995), for which she received a Bavarian Film Award for Best Young Actress.
