Fred Ward was an American actor and producer who lived from December 30, 1942, to May 8, 2022. Beginning with a role in an Italian television film in 1973, he went on to appear in a wide range of films, including Escape from Alcatraz, Southern Comfort, The Right Stuff, Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins, Tremors and Tremors 2: Aftershocks, Henry & June, The Player, Swing Shift, and Short Cuts.

On December 30, 1942, Freddie Joe Ward was born in San Diego. He was of Cherokee ancestry. Ward was in the US Air Force for three years before becoming an actor. He also worked as a lumberjack, janitor, and short-order cook in Alaska, fracturing his nose three times.

Ward went on to study acting at the Herbert Berghof Studio and in Rome. He worked as a mime and dubbed Italian films while in Italy until he made his acting debut in two Roberto Rossellini films.

Ward returned to the United States in the early 1970s and worked in experimental theatre and on television. In Hearts of the West, he played a cowboy for the first time in an American film (1975). His first notable part was as fellow escapee John Anglin in Clint Eastwood’s film Escape from Alcatraz (1979).

Ward starred as Earl Bassett in the monster film Tremors, as Henry Miller in Henry & June (with Uma Thurman), and as cop Hoke Moseley in his self-produced Miami Blues in 1990. (with Alec Baldwin and Jennifer Jason Leigh). In the same year, he appeared in Dennis Hopper’s film Catchfire as an FBI agent.

Ward was nominated for a Video Premiere Award in 2001 for his performance in the direct-to-video film Full Disclosure. Joe Dirt, Summer Catch, Wild Iris, the mini-series Dice, and the comedic Corky Romano were among his other credits.

Ward starred in the films Sweet Home Alabama, Enough, and Abandon in 2002. He had a leading role in Birdseye and was cast in the TV pilot Georgetown with Helen Mirren, but the show was never completed. He took a break from acting after parts in The Last Ride, 10.5 and Coast to Coast (all in 2004), and returned as a guest on Grey’s Anatomy and ER (2006 and 2007). Following that, he appeared in the ensemble drama Feast of Love, the thriller Exit Speed, Jennifer Aniston’s Management, The Wild Stallion DVD, and Armored as the boss Ashcroft.

Ward appeared in the French political thriller L’affaire Farewell as Ronald Reagan (2009). In 2012, he guest starred in the TV programs United States of Tara, In Plain Sight, and Leverage, as well as appearing in 30 Minutes or Less. In 2013, he appeared as a guest star in Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg’s film 2 Guns.
