Santos is openly gay and has been transparent about his sexual identity. Even though he was married to a woman between 2012 and 2019, Santos lived with male partners from 2013 onwards.

In October 2022, he stated publicly, “I am openly gay, have never had an issue with my sexual identity in the past decade.” Subsequently, in another interview, he revealed, “I did marry young, and I married a young woman at the time, and we pretty much were in love”. Friends, past colleagues, and former roommates of Santos affirm that he has always been open about his homosexuality.

His marriage to a woman, who is a Brazilian national, wasn’t widely known until it was reported in December 2022.

In the same month, Santos told the New York Post, “I dated women in the past. I married a woman”, and further stated that he was “OK with my sexuality. People change.” Documentation indicates that although a request for dissolution of marriage was filed in May 2013, it was withdrawn by December of the same year.

Santos later filed an immigration petition based on family ties for his wife, which was approved in July 2014, generally interpreted as the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services validating the marriage.

George Santos Husband

By 2020, Santos confirmed that he was living with a partner named Matheus (or Matt), who he now refers to as his husband.

Who is George Santos?

George Anthony Devolder Santos, born on July 22, 1988, is an American politician who has been serving as the U.S. representative for New York’s 3rd congressional district since 2023.

Affiliated with the Republican Party, Santos made his way to Congress in 2022, following an unsuccessful attempt against the incumbent, Thomas Suozzi, in 2020.

Santos has the distinction of being the first openly LGBT Republican who was not an incumbent to be elected to federal office. In March 2023, he completed the paperwork to participate in the 2024 reelection race, officially announcing his candidacy a month later.

However, two months subsequent to his declaration, Santos was indicted by a federal grand jury on 13 criminal charges, to which he entered a plea of not guilty.
