Hilary Mantel was working on her latest novel ‘excitedly’ just days before she died suddenly of a massive stroke at the age of 70.

Hilary Mantel attended the London School of Economics and Sheffield University to study law.
She briefly worked as a social worker in a nursing home, which influenced her later novels Every Day is Mother’s Day and Vacant Possession.
In 1972, Mantel married Gerald. The couple split up for two years before reuniting.

Mantel’s first book, Every Day is Mother’s Day, was published in 1985, and she went on to become the Spectator’s film critic in 1987.

Her fourth novel, Fludd, won the Cheltenham Festival Prize, the Southern Arts Literature Prize, and the Winifred Holtby Prize by the time she was in her forties.

A Place of Greater Safety, her fifth novel, won the Sunday Express Book of the Year Award. Beyond Black, which was published in 2005, was nominated for the Orange Prize.

Mantel was outspoken on a variety of issues, including Brexit, stating in 2021 that she hoped to obtain Irish citizenship, leave the country, and become a “European again.”

She described the UK as “an artificial and precarious construct” in an interview with the Italian newspaper La Repubblica.
