Issa Rae Background
Jo-Issa Rae Diop was born in the California city of Los Angeles. Her father, Abdoulaye Diop, is a Senegalese pediatrician and neonatologist, and her mother, Delyna Marie Diop (née Hayward), is a Louisiana teacher. Her parents met while they were both in school in France.
Issa Rae Career
Rae began work on a comedy series pilot with Larry Wilmore in 2013, in which she would star. The series, which was eventually titled Insecure, was about the awkward experiences of a contemporary African-American woman. The pilot was picked up by HBO in early 2015, and it was later greenlit. Since its debut in 2016, the series has garnered critical acclaim; NPR’s Eric Deggans wrote, “Rae has produced a series that feels revolutionary simply by poking fun at the life of an average, twenty-something black woman.”
Insecure was named one of the top ten television shows of 2017 by the American Film Institute.
Rae has also appeared in feature films such as The Hate U Give (2018), Little (2019), The Photograph (2020), The Lovebirds (2020), and Vengeance (2020). (2022).
In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, she will also play Jessica Drew / Spider-Woman (2023). Rae provided voice work for the Academy Award-winning short film Hair Love, which won Best Animated Short Film in 2020.

Issa Rae married her longtime partner, Senegalese businessman Louis Diame, in a private ceremony in France in July 2021. Rae debuted her engagement ring on the cover of Essence magazine in April 2019.
