Joseph Makoju Background

Makoju was born in Okene, Kogi State, Nigeria, on July 13, 1948. Makoju received the Harford Award from Government College in Kaduna, as well as the J. F. Kennedy Essays Award from Federal Government College in Warri, Nigeria.

Joseph Makoju Education

Joseph Makoju earned a BSc in mechanical engineering with First Class Honour from the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom in 1972, and an M.Phil. in mechanical engineering from the same university in 1974. From 1989 to 1990, he studied at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, Jos (mni). He also possesses an honorary Doctor of Science in engineering from Makurdi’s Federal University of Agriculture.

Under two different administrations, he served as Special Adviser (Electric Power) to Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan. He is now the President/Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s Honorary Electric Power Adviser (effect from 20 May 2008). He was also a Special Adviser to the President/Chief Executive of the Dangote Group, as well as the Chairman of the Cement Manufacturers Association of Nigeria and the Executive Board of the West African Power Pool.

He was previously the managing director/chief executive officer of Nigeria’s national energy company, the erstwhile National Electric Power Authority (NEPA)/Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).

On the basis of his track record in the private sector, he was chosen and invited for this post by the government. And he was the managing director/chief executive officer of the West African Portland Cement Company, Nigeria’s largest cement manufacturer at the time, for about a decade. Makoju was selected as Special Adviser to three Nigerian presidents after his term as managing director/Chief Executive of NEPA.

Joseph Makoju Professional Career

Makoju is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE), the Nigerian Institute of Management (FNIM), and the Nigerian Academy of Engineering.

He is a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management, the British Institute of Mechanical Engineers, and the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (mni). From 1992 until 2000, he was the head of the Cement Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (CMAN). From 1998 to 2000, he served as vice-president of the Nigerian Employers Consultative Association (NECA). He was the President of the Chemical and Non-Metallic Employers Federation (CANMPEF), the largest employers’ organization in the manufacturing sector, from May 1994 until May 1999.

Makoju is a member of the Manufacturer Association of Nigeria’s National Council. He is also a member of the National Economic Revival Council, a think tank that advises the government on economic policy, as well as the London School of Economics’ African Regional Board.

Joseph Makoju Awards

Makoju was awarded the officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) award in October 2000, and the officer of the Federal Republic award in 2011, both Nigerian national awards, in recognition of his efforts and contributions to the country’s growth. He was also awarded the Niger Republic’s National Grand Commander of the Special Order of Merit. He is also an honorary Doctor of Science from Makurdi’s Federal University of Agriculture.
