Between 1972 and 1978, Kashim Shettima attended Lamisula Primary School in Maiduguri. At Government Community Secondary School in Biu, where he completed his secondary education, he earned his West African School Certificate in 1978. Between 1980 and 1983, Kashim Shettima attended Government Science Secondary School Potiskum as well. Kashim Shettima studied Agricultural Economics at the University of Maiduguri after completing his secondary education there, earning a Second Class degree in 1989. (Upper Division). Kashim Shettima quickly enrolled in a master’s program following his graduation and Youth Service and eventually earned his Master of Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan in 1991.

In 1993, Kashim Shettima, who had earned his master’s degree, was a lecturer at the University of Maiduguri’s Department of Agricultural Economics.

He made the switch to banking in 1993. At the bank’s branch in Ikeja, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria, he worked as head of the accounts unit for the (now-defunct) Commercial Bank of Africa Limited. Shettima served there between 1993 and 1997. He joined the African International Bank Limited in 1997 as a deputy manager, and in 2001 he was promoted to manager. He transferred to the Zenith Bank in 2001 and is now the manager of Maiduguri’s main branch. Prior to leaving the Zenith Bank in 2007 as General Manager after being appointed Commissioner for Finance in Borno State, he progressed through the ranks of the bank to Senior Manager/Branch Head, Assistant General Manager (AGM)/Zonal Head (North-East), and Deputy General Manager/Zonal Head (North-East).
