According to the spokesman for the Kremlin, Dmitry Peskov, Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, has expressed his condolences over the passing of Mikhail Gorbachev.

Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, paid tribute to him on Twitter, as did Prime Minister Boris Johnson of the United Kingdom, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice of the United States of America, and Taoiseach Micheál Martin of Ireland.

Gorbachev was described as a “towering global leader, committed multilateralist, and tireless advocate for peace” by António Guterres, the secretary-general of the United Nations, while former United States Secretary of State James Baker III said that “history will remember Mikhail Gorbachev as a giant who steered his great nation towards democracy.” Both of these statements were made in reference to the end of the Cold War. “He was a very pleasant man to deal with,” said former Prime Minister of Canada Brian Mulroney, adding that “history will remember him as a transformational leader.”

In his role as the final leader of the Soviet Union and as the head of state of the country from 1988 until 1991, Mikhail Gorbachev fulfilled the following responsibilities:

General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1985 until 1991, Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet from 1988 until 1989, Chairman of the Supreme Soviet from 1989 until 1990, and President of the Soviet Union from 1990 until the country’s dissolution in 1991.

Gorbachev was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 for his contribution to the successful conclusion of the Cold War; however, a large number of people in Russia hold him accountable for the dissolution of the Soviet Union as well as the social and economic crises that befell the country in the early 1990s.
