Who is Niyi Akinmolayan?

Niyi Akinmolayan is a filmmaker, director, and media consultant from Nigeria. He is most known for directing The Wedding Party 2, a sequel to the equally successful The Wedding Party, which starred Banky Wellington, Adesua Etomi, and Enyinna Nwigwe and was the biggest grossing Nigerian film of all time (2016).

Anthill Productions, a media production company, is his creation and he is the Creative Director.

Akinmolayan is of Yoruba heritage and hails from Ondo State in South West Nigeria. He enrolled at Yaba College of Technology to pursue an engineering degree.

Akinmolayan began his professional career as a graphic designer, website designer, and as an apprentice to Nollywood filmmakers, where he honed his abilities in video editing, animation, after effects, and visual effects.

His first picture, Kajola, was released in 2010 and was a visual effects experiment that was ridiculed by both film creators and critics. Anthill Productions, which Akinmolayan founded in 2008, was responsible for the visual effects for the film Kajola.

Ivie Okujaye, Tina Mba, Beverly Naya, Wale Adebayo, Victor Godfery, Helga Sosthenes, and Eno Ekpenyong appeared in the Nigerian dance film Make a Move, which he directed in 2014. The film was nominated for Best Movie at the 2015 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (Drama).

Falling, starring Adesua Etomi, Desmond Elliot, and Blossom Chukwujekwu, and Out of Luck, starring Linda Ejiofor, Tope Tedela, and Jide Kosoko, were both released in 2015.

Akinmolayan was nominated for Best Director at the 2016 Nigeria Entertainment Awards, while main actress Adesua Etomi won Best Actress at the 2016 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards for her performance in Falling.

Akinmolayan released a short film titled PlayThing, a 3D animated animation, in December 2016 to excellent reviews at the FilmOne IMAX cinema in Lagos.

The Arbitration, starring O.C. Ukeje and Adesua Etomi, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2017. Following the success of The Arbitration, Akinmolayan held a contest for aspiring writers on his blog, which drew over 300 entries and resulted in the production of the short film Room 315.

In 2017, following the success of Plaything, Akinmolayan collaborated with FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria Plc to create an animated series named “Adventures of Lola and Chuchu.”

In 2022, a movie he filmed, Chief Daddy 2 was released and premiered on January 1, 2022. The movie produced by Ebonylife CEO Mo Abudu.
