Nury Martinez (born July 9, 1973) is an American politician who is currently a member of the Los Angeles City Council’s 6th District. Martinez, a Democrat, was unanimously elected President of the Los Angeles City Council in December 2019, after serving as the Council’s president pro tempore.

Nury Martinez is the Council’s first Latina President. She previously served on the Board of Education of the Los Angeles Unified School District from 2009 to 2013.

Nury Martinez was the Executive Director of the environmental justice organization Pacoima Beautiful and was elected to the City Council of San Fernando in 2003 and 2007, where she also served as Mayor.

She was elected to the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Board of Education in 2009, representing Board District 6.

Martinez was elected in a special election to the Los Angeles City Council on July 23, 2013, to replace Tony Cárdenas, who vacated his seat after being elected to the United States House of Representatives for California’s 29th congressional district. Martinez defeated former Assemblywoman Cindy Montaez in that election, and she defeated her again in a rematch in 2015, when she won her first full term.
