Sheikh Khalifa Cause of Death has not yet been released by the Emirates. However, he hasn’t been seen in public since 2014, when he had surgery after suffering a stroke, but he had continued to make decisions before he passed away.
Sheikh Khalifa Career
From 2004 until 2022, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was the President of the United Arab Emirates, the Emir of Abu Dhabi, and the supreme commander of the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces. From the late 1980s to the present, he served as Chairman of the Supreme Petroleum Council.
When his father, Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, suffered health issues in the late 1990s, Khalifa assumed several functions of the presidency in a de facto role as crown prince.
On November 2, 2004, he took over as emir of Abu Dhabi and the presidency of the United Arab Emirates from his father.
He was one of the world’s wealthiest kings throughout his reign.
He was chairman of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, which oversees $875 billion in assets, the greatest amount handled by a nation’s head of state in the world, and he oversaw 97.8 billion barrels of oil reserves.
The Al Nahyan family is estimated to be worth $150 billion collectively.
After Abu Dhabi paid Dubai $10 billion to help pay off debts, the world’s tallest man-made tower, formerly known as Burj Dubai, was renamed the Burj Khalifa in his honor on January 4, 2010. Khalifa was listed to Forbes’ list of the world’s most powerful individuals in 2018.
Khalifa suffered a stroke in January 2014 and was in stable condition following surgery. He thereafter took a smaller profile in state matters, but he kept his ceremonial presidency. Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, his half-brother, was in charge of the state’s public affairs and day-to-day decision-making in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
Khalifa was named Ruler’s Representative (mayor) in the Eastern Region of Abu Dhabi and Head of the Courts Department in Al Ain after his father, Zayed, became Emir of Abu Dhabi in 1966. Before becoming the Emir of Abu Dhabi, Zayed served as the Ruler’s Representative in the Eastern Region. Tahnoun bin Mohammed Al Nahyan was appointed to the office a few months later.
Following the foundation of the UAE in 1971, Khalifa was named Prime Minister, Head of the Abu Dhabi Cabinet (under his father), Minister of Defense, and Minister of Finance in Abu Dhabi.
The Abu Dhabi Cabinet was replaced by the Abu Dhabi Executive Council after the United Arab Emirates Cabinet was reconstructed, and Khalifa was appointed 2nd Deputy Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates (23 December 1973) and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council (20 January 1974) by his father.
Khalifa was named Head of the Abu Dhabi Department of Defense the same day after being proclaimed Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi on February 1, 1969.
He led the formation of the Abu Dhabi Defense Force, which formed the basis of the UAE Armed Forces after 1971.
Khalifa bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the eldest son of Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, was born on September 7, 1948, in Qasr Al-Muwaiji, Al Ain, Abu Dhabi (then part of the Trucial States). He was a Royal Military Academy Sandhurst graduate.
Sheikh Khalifa died at the age of 73 on May 13, 2022. The Ministry of Presidential Affairs established a 40-day national mourning period, with flags lowered at half-staff, as well as a three-day work stoppage in commercial enterprises and government institutions at the federal and municipal levels.
Many other Arab League countries have declared national mourning. Official mourning was announced in Bahrain, Lebanon, Oman, Mauritania, and Qatar, with flags flying at half-mast for three days. Jordan has proclaimed 40 days of mourning, while Kuwait’s flags will fly at half-mast. Pakistan has declared a three-day mourning period in his honor. “The UAE has lost a visionary leader, and the people of Pakistan have lost a true friend,” the Foreign Ministry stated in a statement. India has also proclaimed a day of national mourning, with flags flying at half mast, beginning on May 14, 2022.
