Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan served as President of the United Arab Emirates, Emir of Abu Dhabi, and supreme commander of the UAE Armed Forces from 2004 until 2022. He was Chairman of the Supreme Petroleum Council from the late 1980s until the present.

Khalifa inherited certain tasks of the president in a de facto position as crown prince after his father, Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, faced health problems in the late 1990s.

On November 2, 2004, he succeeded his father as emir of Abu Dhabi and president of the United Arab Emirates.

During his reign, he was one of the richest kings in the world.

Khalifa was designated Prime Minister, Head of the Abu Dhabi Cabinet (under his father), Minister of Defense, and Minister of Finance in Abu Dhabi when the UAE was founded in 1971.

After the United Arab Emirates Cabinet was reformed, the Abu Dhabi Executive Council was formed, and Khalifa was named 2nd Deputy Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates (23 December 1973) and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council (20 January 1974) by his father.

On February 1, 1969, Khalifa was designated Head of the Abu Dhabi Department of Defense on the same day he was declared Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.

After 1971, he spearheaded the development of the Abu Dhabi Defense Force, which became the foundation of the UAE Armed Forces.

Khalifa bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s eldest son, was born in Qasr Al-Muwaiji, Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, on September 7, 1948. (then part of the Trucial States). He was a Sandhurst graduate of the Royal Military Academy.

National mourning has been announced in a number of Arab League nations. Bahrain, Lebanon, Oman, Mauritania, and Qatar all declared national mourning, with flags flying at half-mast for three days. Jordan has declared a 40-day mourning period, and Kuwait’s flags will be flown at half-mast. In his honor, Pakistan has proclaimed a three-day mourning period.
