Hufnagel joined Tommy Amaker’s Harvard Crimson men’s basketball team as an assistant coach and recruiter in June 2009. In a CBS Sports poll in 2011, he was named as the mid-major assistant coach most likely to “make it big time due to his recruiting abilities” by his peers.

Prior to the 2012-13 season, he was chosen to a CBS Sports college basketball “dream squad” of assistant coaches, and dubbed “one of the most tenacious and enthusiastic recruiters in the game.”

He is also known for his work at Harvard, where he assisted in the development of Jeremy Lin and Wesley Saunders.

Harvard went 90-30 during Hufnagel’s four years on the job, and in his final season, the Crimson stunned New Mexico in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Hufnagel was named to coach Team USA’s Youth Team in the 19th Maccabiah Games in Israel, but he turned down a position as an assistant coach with the Vanderbilt Commodores.

Hufnagel became an assistant coach for the Vanderbilt Commodores in May 2013, working under Kevin Stallings. ESPN credited him with bringing the 29th-ranked 2014 recruiting class to Vanderbilt, which includes Wade Baldwin IV and Matthew Fisher-Davis. Hufnagel left the show after one season.

Hufnagel joined the coaching staff of the California Golden Bears, managed by Cuonzo Martin, in 2014. Jaylen Brown and Ivan Rabb were persuaded to join the team thanks to Hufnagel’s efforts. The duo assisted in the Golden Bears’ NCAA Tournament appearance in 2016.

In 2015, a Golden Bears reporter filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against Hufnagel, alleging that after she turned down his approaches, he stopped providing her with material, causing her to lose her job.

Hufnagel allegedly approached her several times and offered her a three-way, which she declined. The reporter said that in revenge, he gave her bogus information. Hufnagel was fired after an investigation for violating UC Berkeley’s sexual harassment policy.

Hufnagel joined Eric Musselman and the University of Nevada Wolf Pack men’s basketball team as an assistant coach on April 8, 2016. UNR President Marc Johnson endorsed Hufnagel’s appointment, publicly stating that the release of hundreds of texts given by Hufnagel’s counsel should assuage student and staff concerns about his hiring.

After one season together, Hufnagel and Nevada parted ways.
