Grant was born in the Ohio town of Fairview Park. Her father was a Scottish geology professor, while her mother worked in Africa and the Middle East as a political science professor, foreign service diplomat, and educational administrator.

For most of her work, she draws on language and dialogues with writers. Grant investigates the writing process and ideas based on linguistic theory as they relate to art, producing visual images influenced by language as well as collaborative group installations.

She is situated in Los Angeles, California, United States of America.
