Castles are fortified structures that were mostly built in the middle ages, and were characterized by nobility, royalty and elegance.
Most European-style castles are believed to have originated in the 9th and 10th centuries, after the fall of the Carolingian Empire which ultimately resulted in its territory being divided among individual princes. Following the territories granted to them, these nobles built castles to control the area; surrounding them with both offensive and defensive structures; in preparation against possible enemy attack.
Today, we have a good number of some of these castles littered all around Europe; some of them are still occupied to this day though at a heavy price. Others serve as museums- an adequate reminder of the past and a physical representation of how buildings were styled in the middle ages, Below are some of the very impressive castles highlighting architecture in Europe and their locations in pictures.
