Victor Wembanyama (born January 4, 2004) is a French professional basketball player who currently plays for Metropolitans 92 of the LNB Pro A.

He is a 2.20 metre (7 ft 3 in) tall power forward who is regarded as one of Europe’s best prospects of his generation. He is widely regarded as the favorite to be selected first overall in the 2023 NBA draft.

Wembanyama was born in the French town of Le Chesnay. He grew up as a goalkeeper in football and practicing judo. Wembanyama had been coached in basketball by his mother, who had previously played the sport, since he was four or five years old.

He began his career at his local club, Entente Le Chesnay Versailles, and joined the Nanterre 92 youth system at the age of ten. His parents turned down offers from larger clubs such as FC Barcelona and ASVEL.

Wembanyama joined Espoirs Nanterre in the LNB Espoirs, France’s under-21 league, for the 2019-20 season. He represented Nanterre’s under-18 team at the Kaunas Tournament in February 2020, a qualifier for the Adidas Next Generation Tournament (ANGT).

Wembanyama signed a two-year contract with Metropolitans 92 of the Pro A on June 30, 2022.

In a friendly game against the NBA G League Ignite on October 4, 2022, Wembanyama scored 37 points on 7-of-11 three-point shooting, while also grabbing four rebounds and blocking five shots.

Wembanyama competed for France in the 2019 FIBA U16 European Championship, which was held in Udine, Italy.
Wembanyama broke the FIBA record for most blocks in a single tournament.
