Alexandra Maria Lara Background
Alexandra Maria Lara was born in Bucharest, Romania. She is the only child of actor Valentin Plătăreanu and his wife, Doina. Her family fled to West Germany in 1983 to escape Nicolae Ceaușescu’s Communist Romanian regime.
Despite having planned to move to Canada, the family ended up in Berlin.

Alexandra Maria Lara began appearing in television dramas at the age of sixteen; since then, she has appeared in films, including as Traudl Junge, Adolf Hitler’s secretary, in the Academy Award-nominated 2004 film Downfall; following this, Francis Ford Coppola wrote her a letter and offered her a leading role in Youth Without Youth (2007).
In 2007, she played Belgian journalist Annik Honoré in the Ian Curtis biopic Control. She was a member of the Cannes Film Festival jury in 2008.
She’s also appeared in a number of French films, including Napoléon and L’Affaire Farewell. She appeared in The Reader and Der Baader Meinhof Komplex, both of which were nominated for best picture and best foreign language film at the 81st Academy Awards.
In 2018, she co-starred in Ben Wheatley’s Happy New Year, Colin Burstead as his German girlfriend, alongside her real-life husband Sam Riley.
