Can Amber Heard Pay The $15 million Defamation Fee?

With her net worth $15 million would be too much for Amber Heard to pay Johnny Depp following the Defamation suit filed against her. Johnny Depp won the court case. However, Amber has appealed.

Amber Laura Heard (born April 22, 1986) is an American actress best known for her roles in the films Never Back Down (2008), Drive Angry (2011), The Rum Diary (2011), and as Mera in Aquaman (2018) and its scheduled sequel in 2023. She has been named an ACLU advocate for women’s rights and a Human Rights Champion by the UN’s Office for the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

From 2015 until 2017, Heard was married to actor Johnny Depp. When Heard claimed that Depp had been aggressive throughout their relationship, their divorce gained public attention. Depp sued the publishers of the British tabloid The Sun for libel in 2018, accusing Heard of sexual harassment. The trial judge concluded in 2020 that the printed story alleging Depp’s abuse of Heard was largely true.

Depp sued Heard for defamation in early 2019 after reading an op-ed in The Washington Post in which Heard “spoke up against sexual violence,” with Heard writing that she had become a “public figure representing domestic abuse” two years prior and had seen “how institutions protect men accused of abuse.” Heard launched a countersuit against Depp in 2020.

The jury in the Depp v. Heard trial in Virginia in 2022 found that Heard defamed Depp three times in the op-ed with false statements and actual malice, and that Depp’s lawyer Adam Waldman defamed Heard once with actual malice in a false statement that Heard and her friends “roughed” up a penthouse as a “hoax” against Depp.

Depp received $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages from Heard, the latter of which was capped at $350,000 due to Virginia state law, while Heard received $2 million in compensatory damages and no punitive damages from Depp.

In May 2016, Heard filed for divorce from Depp and got a temporary restraining order against him, according to a statement.

“Johnny has been verbally and physically violent to me throughout our relationship. When I questioned Johnny’s authority or disagreed with him, I was subjected to a barrage of emotional, verbal, and physical abuse from him, including angry, aggressive, humiliating, and frightening assaults.”

From April 11 to June 1, 2022, the Depp-Heard trial took place in Fairfax County, Virginia.

As a result of the jury’s finding that all three assertions in Heard’s op-ed were false, defamed Depp, and were written with genuine malice, Depp was awarded $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages from Heard in Depp’s complaint.

Due to a limit imposed by Virginia state law, the punitive damages were lowered to $350,000.
