Emoni James-Wayne Bates, born on January 28, 2004, is an American professional basketball player currently playing for the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Cleveland Cavaliers. Before turning pro, he played college basketball for the Memphis Tigers and the Eastern Michigan Eagles.

During his freshman and sophomore years in high school, Bates played for Lincoln High School in his hometown of Ypsilanti, Michigan. He received significant national media attention and was rated the top recruit in his class. As a freshman, he led Lincoln to a state championship and made history by becoming the first sophomore to receive the Gatorade National Player of the Year boys’ award. For his junior year, Bates transferred to Ypsi Prep Academy, a school founded by his father. Though initially committed to Michigan State, he chose to graduate early from high school and start his college career at Memphis.

Bates’s freshman year at Memphis was marked by injuries and he fell in NBA draft projections due to not meeting anticipated performance levels. He then transferred to his hometown team, Eastern Michigan, for his sophomore season. Eventually, he was picked 49th in the 2023 NBA draft by the Cavaliers.
