Gerd Müller was a German professional footballer. He is nicknamed “Der Bomber” as he is regarded as one of the greatest goalscorers in the history of the sport. Gerd Müller scored the winning goal for West Germany in the 1974 World Cup final against the Netherlands.

Gerd Müller died of Alzheimer’s disease on Sunday, August 15, 2021. Gerd Müller has been battling Alzheimer’s disease since 2015. Bayern Munich issued a statement ahead of Muller’s 70th birthday that he was receiving treatment for the illness.
Alzheimer’s disease
Alzheimer’s disease, according to Mayo Clinic, is a progressive neurologic disorder that causes the brain to shrink (atrophy) and brain cells to die. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia — a continuous decline in thinking, behavioral and social skills that affect a person’s ability to function independently.
It is estimated that 5.8 million people in the United States age 65 and older live with Alzheimer’s disease. Of those, 80% are 75 years old and older. Out of the approximately 50 million people worldwide with dementia, between 60% and 70% are estimated to have Alzheimer’s disease.
