Soleimani, the top Iranian general was killed early in January after a United States’ drone struck his car as he departed from the Baghdad airport (Iraq) in a convoy. His death was authorized by the United States President Donald J. Trump who accused Soleimani and Iran in general of plotting and executing terrorist attacks on US citizens in the middle east.
Soleimani headed the Quds Force, the foreign operations arm of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, and was a top member in the Iranian leadership.
The strike by the US drones also killed Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, deputy commander of Iran-backed militias in Iraq, the Popular Mobilisation Forces, and five others. Iran condemned the attack which they replied saying, they would definitely respond. They responded by firing a ballistic missile targeting US forces in Iraq, but Washington reported that they were no casualties or deaths. Iran also sent another ballistic missile that accidentally shot down a Ukrainian passenger jetliner just some minutes after takeoff in Tehran killing about 176 people.
