Naomi Judd was an American country music singer and actor who was born Diana Ellen Judd on January 11, 1946 and died on April 30, 2022. She and her daughter Wynonna were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame as members of The Judds in 2021.
Judd was born in Ashland, Kentucky, on January 11, 1946. Her father was the proprietor of a petrol station. Christina Ciminella (later Wynonna Judd), Naomi Judd’s first child, was born when she was 18 years old. Judd raised both daughters as a single parent after the birth of her daughter Ashley (April 1968), who went on to become a film and stage actress, and the end of her marriage to Michael Ciminella. She first went to nursing school at California’s College of Marin while living in nearby Lagunitas, California, and later began a successful singing career with daughter Wynonna.
She founded the Judds, an extremely successful singing duo, with her daughter Wynonna Judd. The Judds, country music’s most famous mother–daughter duo, had twenty top-10 hits (including fifteen at number one) and were undefeated at all three major country music awards events for eight consecutive years. In addition, the duo received five Grammy Awards and a slew of additional accolades.
Over the course of their nearly three-decade career, the mother-daughter duo had 14 No. 1 hits. After reaching the pinnacle of country music, they called it quits in 1991 after Naomi Judd was diagnosed with hepatitis C. Wynonna’s solo career continued.

Naomi Judd was candid about her health issues, which included severe sadness and anxiety. She detailed her diagnosis of hepatitis C in her memoir, “River of Time,” which she claims she caught accidentally while working as a nurse. Her doctors assured her she was entirely rid of the illness by 1995, she said.
When she returned home following a 2010 reunion tour, she felt as if she had lost her identity, isolating herself at home and battling with terrible panic attacks, according to her memoir. She also admitted to having been traumatized by sexual abuse as a child. She was admitted to a hospital’s psychiatric ward and completed an outpatient treatment program.
