Later, he graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a master’s degree in public affairs. Johnson spoke at NKU’s commencement ceremony in 2018. An honorary doctorate degree was bestowed upon him.

Johnson belonged to the National Press Club, the National Association of Black Journalists, and the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. He was a national advocate for heart attack and cancer survivors. On April 3, 2022, he passed away.
