His most well-known roles are those in the comedy film Free Guy and the science fiction series Stranger Things (2016–present), where he played Steve Harrington (2021). Joe Keery Background

In Massachusetts’ Newburyport, Keery was born. His mother is an English professor, and his father is an architect. He is the second of a total of five kids.

Keery grew up in Newburyport and went to local Montessori elementary and middle schools, River Valley Charter School, and Newburyport High School. He participated in Theater in the Open when he was younger, a performing arts camp in Maudslay State Park, but he didn’t start acting until high school, when his elder sister insisted he perform there.

Keery auditioned for more than a hundred jobs after receiving his DePaul degree. Prior to his breakthrough role in Stranger Things, Keery had appearances in the television shows Empire and Chicago Fire as well as commercials for Domino’s, KFC, and amiibo. He made his debut in the independent film Henry Gamble’s Birthday Party, directed by Stephen Cone.

Steve was Keery’s breakout character in the Netflix science fiction series Stranger Things. He first submitted a video for the part of Jonathan before sending in one for his character, Steve, and was eventually cast in late 2015. The program made its debut to favorable reviews in 2016. For Stranger Things’ second season, he was elevated from recurring cast to series regular. The third and fourth seasons, respectively, were released in 2019 and 2022.

Since the start of Stranger Things, Keery has appeared in a number of independent films, including the 2020 satire Spree, in which she plays the lead role. Additionally, he portrayed game developer Walter “Keys” McKey in the action comedy film Free Guy from 2021, which went on to become a huge box office success. He was chosen to play Liam Neeson’s opposite in the sci-fi action movie Cold Storage in May 2022.

Keery is not just an actor but also a musician. He started releasing songs in his early 20s under the moniker “Cool Cool Cool.” For the Chicago-based garage and psych-rock band Post Animal, Keery played guitar and drums. In October 2015, they launched their debut album. When I Think Of You In A Castle, the band’s second album, was released in April 2018 and included Keery on guitar and vocals. Keery left the group later because of acting obligations, and as of 2019, he was no longer a touring member.

Under the stage name Djo, Keery self-released the song “Roddy” on July 19, 2019. On August 9, 2019, Keery released a follow-up single under the same name, titled “Chateau (Feel Alright).” On September 13, 2019, Keery released Twenty Twenty, his first album as Djo. NME gave the album a strong review and linked Keery’s music to Tame Impala and Ariel Pink, calling him “a musician of very high calibre who… dabbles in the kind of imaginative, warped psychedelia that softly twists your melon and continually shapeshifts around you.”
