Olabiyi Durojaiye Biography

At the start of the Nigerian Fourth Republic, Olabiyi Durojaiye (8 February 1933 – 24 August 2021) was elected Senator for the Ogun East seat of Ogun State, Nigeria, on the Alliance for Democracy (AD) platform. On May 29, 1999, he was sworn in as President.

Olabiyi Durojaiye Education

Durojaiye has a BSc (Economics) and an LLB from the University of London. He was admitted to the Nigerian Bar in 1979 and served as a Supreme Court of Nigeria Barrister and Solicitor. He also received his diploma from Kuru’s National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies.

Olabiyi Durojaiye Career

He served in the Nigerian government for 35 years, including 28 years as a director of the Central Bank of Nigeria and the National Mint.

He ran for President of Nigeria in 1992 on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), but lost to M.K.O. Abiola. General Ibrahim Babangida annulled Abiola’s subsequent election as president, ushering in a return to military government. Durojaiye was arrested by General Sani Abacha’s military administration in December 1996 and imprisoned for 560 days, during which time he was mistreated.

Olabiyi Durojaiye Wife

Florence Olufunso Adejoke, Durojaiye’s wife, died on June 6, 2009, in Ikeja, at the age of 72, two months after her and her husband celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Her husband, six children, and several grandchildren survive her.
