Manfred Thierry Mugler Biography

Manfred Thierry Mugler (December 21, 1948 – January 23, 2022) was a fashion designer from France.

Mugler was born in the French city of Strasbourg. His love prompted him to devote more time to sketching than to school, and he began studying classical dancing at the age of nine. He joined the ballet corps of the Rhin Opera (Opéra national du Rhin) when he was 14 years old.

Mugler began formal interior design instruction at the Strasbourg School of Decorative Arts about the same period.

Manfred Thierry Mugler Career

Mugler began creating garments for Karim in 1971, when he was in his early twenties, already displaying the broad-shouldered, 1940s-inspired styles for which he would later become famous.

Mugler moved to Paris when he was 24 years old. He started creating garments for Gudule, a Parisian shop. Mugler began designing for a range of prominent ready-to-wear fashion firms in Paris, Milan, London, and Barcelona when he was 26 years old.

Mugler launched his first personal collection, “Café de Paris,” in 1973. The collection had a refined and urban feel about it. Melka Tréanton, a well-known fashion editor, was instrumental in launching his career. She requested him to exhibit his paintings in Tokyo for a Shiseido event in 1976.

In 1978, he opened his first Paris boutique in the 1er Arrondissement’s Place des Victoires, quickly establishing himself as one of the most outspoken members of the broad-shoulder brigade, with a penchant for mid-century sci-fi themes and exaggerated 1940s-50s-style glamour marked by sharply constructed tailoring.

Thierry Mugler became an internationally recognized designer in the 1980s and 1990s, sometimes paired with Claude Montana and Azzedine Alaa but best known for his shapely suits, and his collections were commercially successful.

Viktor Lazlo’s costumes for hosting Eurovision 1987 were designed by him.

He designed Demi Moore’s black outfit in the 1993 film Indecent Proposal.

Thierry Mugler: Photographer, Mugler’s debut photography book, was published in 1988.
In 1999, he published a monograph titled Fashion Fetish Fantasy, which included photographs of his inventions.

Mugler is also a director of short films, commercials, and video clips. He frequently creates costumes for musical comedies, concerts, operas, and the theater (including the Comédie Française’s Macbeth).

He’s collaborated with Robert Altman and George Michael (he directed Michael’s “Too Funky” music video in 1992). He also directed the first commercial for Alien, one of his fragrances.

Since 1997, Clarins has owned the rights to his name, Thierry Mugler.

Mugler retired from the fashion industry in 2002. Mugler teamed with Cirque du Soleil in 2002. He directed “Extravaganza,” one of Zumanity’s scenes, as well as designing all of the actors’ costumes and identities.

Thierry Mugler Beauty, a high-end cosmetics collection, was established by the Mugler brand in 2008.

Mugler served as Beyoncé’s aesthetic advisor in 2009. For her “I Am… World Tour,” he designed the costumes.

Nicola Formichetti was named Creative Director of the Thierry Mugler brand in September 2010. In January 2011, he relaunched the brand’s menswear collection in cooperation with Romain Kremer, changing the name to MUGLER and deleting the first name.

Mugler’s cosmetic change was featured in an April 2010 New York Times article. “[Mugler] has adopted the moniker Manfred and has turned his body…into a 240-pound display of muscle, nipple, and tattoo…”

Formichetti stated in April 2013 that he and MUGLER will be parting ways after more than two years as the fashion house’s creative director. Formichetti left MUGLER to join the Diesel brand in Italy.

David Koma was named artistic director of House of Mugler in December 2013.

Mugler directed the music video and staging for San Marino’s Eurovision Song Contest entry I Didn’t Know, which was performed by Turkish artist Serhat, in 2016.

Despite retiring from his company in 2003, he made an exception to design for the Met Gala in 2019 and for a good friend, Kim Kardashian, under the moniker “House of Mugler.”

In 1996, Mugler released Angel Men, or A*Men, a male counterpart of Angel. Caramel, coffee, vanilla, patchouli, and honey are among the components in this fragrance.
