Smithsburg Maryland Shooting

When someone opened fire in a manufacturing business in western Maryland, three individuals were murdered and another was injured, and a state trooper was injured in a gunfight with the suspect on Thursday afternoon.

Around 2:30 p.m., deputies went to an active shooting at Columbia Machine, Inc. on Bikle Road in Smithsburg.

Three people were killed, and another was critically injured; initially, authorities said four people were injured. There was no information on the victims’ identity or whether they were employees available at the time.

A Maryland state trooper was involved in a gunfight with the suspect on Mapleville Road a short time after the shooting, roughly five miles south of the plant, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office’s spokesperson, Sgt. Carly Hose, said she wasn’t able to divulge the suspect’s name or age, but that he is male. She didn’t know what kind of gun the suspect was carrying.

Hose stated that the probe is still ongoing. The original scene is being handled by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, while the second scene is being handled by Maryland State Police.

How Smithsburg Maryland Shooter Was Caught

The alleged gunman drove away, but was apprehended a short time later at Mapleville and Mount Aetna roads, outside of Hagerstown, about 10 miles south of the firm in Smithsburg, according to Sgt. Carly Hose of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

The man exchanged gunfire with a Maryland State Police trooper there, according to Hose, who was hit in the shoulder and returned fire. The alleged gunman was also hurt. Both were undergoing medical treatment in a hospital.

Hose refused to reveal whether the accused gunman, a man, worked at the business where the incident occurred, and said officials are still investigating where the gunfire began on the premises. The motivation for the shooting, according to Hose, is still being probed. She also couldn’t say whether the victims were employees of the company.

Lt. Joshua McCauley of the county sheriff’s office identified the company as Columbia Machine Inc., which designs and manufactures concrete products such as mixers and molds, according to its website. It was founded in 1937 and now serves customers in over 100 countries.

Attempts to contact a company representative were unsuccessful right away. A video on the company’s website depicts enormous buildings crammed with massive machines.

Authorities said the gunshot happened around 2:30 p.m. Deputies were dispatched to the 12900 block of Bikle Road, near the Pennsylvania border east of Hagerstown. According to Hose, deputies were dispatched to a “active shooter” situation.

The sheriff’s office, according to Hose, was not prepared to share information on the firearm used in the incident. She did not name the alleged shooter.
