How Rapper Goonew Was Shot and Killed

On Friday, March 18, Markelle Antonio Morrow, a Maryland rapper known as Goonew, was shot and died in District Heights, MD. Officers responded to reports of a gunshot in the 3400 block of Walters Lane around 5:40 p.m., and the person was pronounced dead at a local hospital at 7:30 p.m., according to the Prince George’s County Police Department. The name of the victim was eventually revealed by Morrow’s manager to The Washington Post. He was 24 years old at the time.

Morrow’s first mixtape, Certified Goon, was published in 2017 and his debut album, Still Servin, was released two years later. He collaborated often with fellow Maryland rapper Lil Dude, releasing two mixtapes with him and a single with Lil Yachty.

His slick, ahead-of-the-beat style has garnered him a devoted following both locally and nationally. Members of the DMV rap community, including A$AP Ant, IDK, YungManny, and Redveil, have paid their respects to Morrow online in the days since his death.

He was on his way to give his younger sister a birthday gift when he was shot, according to his mother, Patrice Parker Morrow, who spoke to WUSA (a CBS station) on Saturday night. “All he wanted to do was move his family and friends out of the hood,” says the narrator “she stated “His heart was larger than his body. They took me with him when they took him.”
