Gabriel Boric Font (born February 11, 1986) is a Chilean politician and the country’s president-elect.

Gabriel Boric was born in Punta Arenas in 1986, the son of Luis Bori, a chemical engineer who worked for Empresa Nacional del Petróleo for more than four decades, and his mother Maria Font, a Catalan descendant.

In 2008, he became an advisor to the Students’ Union of the Law Department, and in 2009, he became its president, leading a 44-day protest against dean Roberto Nahum. As a university senator, he also represented students.

Boric attended the University of Chile’s Faculty of Law and served as President of the University of Chile Student Federation in 2012.

He rose to prominence as a student representative during the 2011–2013 Chilean student demonstrations.
Boric was elected to the Chamber of Deputies twice, first as an independent candidate in 2013 and subsequently as part of the Broad Front, a socialist alliance he formed with numerous other parties, representing the Magallanes and Antarctic district.

Boric was one of the leaders negotiating the agreement that prepared the way for a referendum on changing the Constitution during Chile’s civil unrest in 2019.

Boric stood as an independent candidate in the 2013 parliamentary elections for District 60 (formerly District 28), which includes the Region of Magallanes and the Chilean Antarctic. He garnered 15,418 votes in the election, the most of any contender in the region.

After winning the official primaries with 60% of the popular vote, he was chosen as the presidential candidate of the Apruebo Dignidad coalition (which included the Broad Front, the Communist Party, and other smaller movements) in 2021.

Boric won the second round of the presidential election on December 19, 2021, defeating José Antonio Kast with 55.9% of the vote.

He is on track to become Chile’s youngest president and the world’s second-youngest state leader, as well as the president elected with the most votes in history.
